What is your decaffeination process for your Sunshine Decaf Blend?
The process of tea decaffeination is one of solvent extraction and can be divided broadly speaking into four sections :
1. Humidification
The tea is firstly humidified, in order to aid the extraction process. The moisture content will go from 4 to 6% to about 40%.
2. Extraction
Extraction is done by washing the tea with a suitable solvent (methylene chloride) which dissolves the caffeine from the tea (caffeine content around 3%), the caffeine enriched solvent then being subjected to a two stage evaporation process in order that the solvent can be recovered and reused. Extraction of the caffeine from the tea is achieved using a continuous process. The tea is decaffeinated to a level of less than 0.3 % caffeine
3. Solvent evaporation
The excess solvent is evaporated. MC becomes a gas at 40C, and hence it is easy achievable to end up well below the legal 5 ppm (parts per million) solvent residue level in the decaffeinated tea.
4. Drying.
The last step in the process is to dry the humid decaffeinated tea back to a moisture content between 4 to 6%.
